Something red, like red flowers. Fruit, oranges and tangerines. Also, if there is an Asian market in your area, they usually have a nice selection of gifts... tea, teapots, something "piggish" this year as it is the year of the boar (or pig) (a porcelein pig figurine, glass pig, etc).

This year February 18th will mark the beginning of the Year of the PIG!!
Some very easy gifts to give are envelopes containing coins or sweets (traditional styles can be bought easily in Chinatown), or you could give fortune cookies. Oranges and tangerines are a symbol of gold and wealth so they also make an inexpensive present to encourage fortune and prosperity in the New Year.
If the person you are buying for was born in the year of the pig you could buy a little jade pendant or statue in the shape of a pig.

You can buy chocolates/ candies/ fruits/ wine/ cookies.... actually you can buy lots of things, but most of the time Chinese people buy food as a gift in Chinese New Year. Just remind you, don't buy any food with black color gift box, black is not gd for any Chinese festival, they prefer red.

The Chinese typically distribute 'laisee' packets (red envelopes that hold gifts of money) to children and unmarried people and they decorate their houses with the colour red, flowers and colourful pictures. Peach blossoms, narcissus and chrysanthemum all have symbolic value for a New Year of prosperity, good health and happiness.
There's a couple of thoughts to help you!

The coming year is the year of pig. Pig is one of the twelve Chinese zodiac, representing luck and wealth. So you can buy some loving pig-style gifts to your friends.
