I've had a bit of knowledge about HTML / XHTML / CSS for a few years now, currently trying to concrete that knowledge with some kind of Web Design degree...

What programming / knowledge would you recommend to become a good Web Designer..?

- Obviously graphic design knowledge and general good sense of style...

Should I be able to write shopping cart programmes, Action Scripting, PHP, My SQL..??

Detailed responses are more than welcome!!!

Cheers.

The types of languages you should learn all depend on what type of web-design you are wanting to pursue. HTML and PHP are always needed in just about any effective website. But from there it goes to what you plan on using for that website.

Python is very fast, but may also give you a loop trying to learn.

Java can be very powerful and allow a bunch of users to do the same thing at once. Both Yahoo! Games and Pogo use Java for most of their online game programs. The problem with this however, the client side must have a Java Runtime Environment to use these services.

Javascript is very useful for small, special effects. Or possible for traffic tracking and other simple things like this. It can be slow, and extremely increase the amount of load time on a certain web-page with alot of javascript embedded.

MySQL is also what you would need to know for shopping-carts, user-accounts, or anything you would like the site to know when a user returns to the website after a period of time.

Hope this helps.

yes you will need to understand all the functions of online shopping and the benifits for each type, depending on the customer volume.

key points to remember - that many overlook even on todays internet.
Not everyone has a high speed connection. The front page MUST load quickly, clearly and point to the sub sections the customers need. Too often webs have a hugh overhead on the front page and users get annoyed and go to the next link in a search.
There is an entire study done on page color, do not over look this. It can drive away customers very easy.

good luck

I think it's very good for you to move to action scripting such as PHP, MySQL, Java, etc. It's also vey good for you if you learn more about animation such as Flash. I guess it's good also for you to learn web developing such as Apache. Furthermore, you can study about web security, web administrator, and networking if you plan to be serious in the web design bussiness.
