I'm not too sure about this question. The only encryption algorithm that I know of is the one that is used by my StompSoft's Digital Vault encryption software. That is 256 bit Blowfish Encryption. As to whether it is more secure than one or the other is more than likely debatable.

purpose is of course to prevent someone else from knowing what data is being transmitted.

Advantage is that if someone doesn't know what you're sending then it remains private (IE your love letters to your spouse or even to your lover... your passwords and user names... your business strategy or layout)

disadvantages. there is a lot of overhead in terms of processing... that which requires encrypting takes processing to convert what would be readable information to the unintelligible and then again at the other end to convert the unintelligible back to the readable while in transport or storage.

also, since many connections do compression based upon the type of data which is coming across the network, encryption breaks that and data such as web txt information cannot be compressed since it's no longer in a text format and therefore can take longer to tx information at times.

Purpose and advantage: Keeps others from being able to easily read your private information that has been encrypted.
Disadvantage: Slows your computer down and uses up resources such as memory, hard drive space etc.
