I have been smoking for about 20 years (I am 35) and would love to give it up but I am really scared that I won't be able to do it. My husband quit 5 years ago and has been on my case ever since to do the same. I wish I could wake up tomorrow and be a non-smoker. The problem is I still enjoy smoking maybe 10 out of the 20 cigarettes I have each day.

I've 'quit' before only to start up again. So you have to fix the way you look at it.
My mistakes when I quit:
1.I smoked my favorite cigarettes for a week (so I went from lights to full flavor)
2. I started running that day...so my nicotine levels dropped way to fast, and my skin crawled and it was hard
3. I craved a cigarette everytime I saw/felt a trigger.

This year I was ready.
1. I went to ultralights for the month prior
2. I didn't quit...I realized that I was a non-smoker
3. Every trigger I had...I thought...that doesn't make any sense, I am a non-smoker. I don't get this craving.
4. Use a straw to occupy your hands. I cut a straw down to the size of a cigarette and breathed through the straw whenever I felt the craving for a cigarette...I didn't need it after a few weeks.

Sep. 3,2006 I realized I was a non-smoker. I also went through a divorce during this time period...so I must have really wanted it or else my technique really worked well. I can be around people smoking, I can be in the same car while someone is smoking and I've held their lit cigarettes for them without wanting one...why...because I am a non-smoker.

Program your mind with what you are!

Good luck.

There is no magic bullet. What works extremely well for one person may not work for another. Today we have a multitude of choices to choose from. The patch, gum, hypnosis, prescription medications and support groups. Not to mention on line assistance from a past tobacco company Phillip-Morris. Make an appointment with your general practitioner and discuss your treatment options and get a full physical. Don't be discouraged. Even if you back track, start again. Keeping a diary of stressors or triggers, those little or not so little things that have you reaching for a cigarette will also help you to break the cycle. Set a quit date and plan ahead for it. I was a three pack a day smoker and have been off the cigarettes for over sixteen years now. I put the money that I would have spent on them into a savings account and now I'm buying a house and going on vacation every year. Not to mention the health benefits. I wish you the best of luck.

Geez...I feel sorry for your poor husband...he had the strength to quit 5 years ago and still has to contend with your "cigarette breath" and second hand smoke...not to mention those ugly ash trays laying around with all those smelly butts in them.

Just go Cold Turkey...you can do it if you really want to...do it first of all for your own health but, also think about your partner there.

I know the feeling all too well. I am a young-puffer (22, smoking since 14/15) but I think I can help a little maybe. The best way to quit, no doubt, is to make yourself truly want to quit. It sounds like your husband getting after you makes you feel like you need to quit for his sake, but you hafta do it for yourself. That is the only way to do it successfully. Everytime you have a smoke, think of ten reasons why you, yourself, want to quit. And realize that cold turkey is best, but not always practical. good luck, Ill need it too.

I tried to quit many times i tried everything. My doctor told me about this pill Zyban. it is exspensive so he gave me a pill that did the same thing infact this pill is how zyban came to be it is Wellbutrin. It is a antidepressant. the ppl who took it noticed that after a few wks of taking wellbutrin they did not want to smoke. So you know what the pharmisuiticals companies did they made a pill exactly the same as wellbutrin and called it zyban so they could charge a lot. My MD told me this so talk to your doctor and ask him about using wellbutrin. With out it i would have never stopped smoking i smoked about 1 half packs a day i have not smoked for 6 years.

I think lots of people who quit smoking replace smoking with something else they could do with their mouths. I know a few people who started to chew lots of gum, eat lots of chips (as a replacement), and even eat sunflower seeds while they are trying to quit smoking. Maybe you can find something that can replace smoking. Goodluck. =]
