Honda Motor Corp is the parent company of Acura. So Acura is a premium, more luxurious brand of car.

Same thing with Toyota being the parent company to Lexus. And Nissan the parent company of Infiniti.

Acura is the high end line of Honda, for North America, Hong Kong, and I believe the Middle East and certain other markets.

Back in the mid 80's, research showed people in those markets wouldn't spend $40,000 or more on a "Honda", so they introduced the Acura brand. Since then Honda (along with Toyota and Nissan) have redefined themselves and are no longer thought of as puddle jumpers, but the names were already well established, so why change.

They are pretty much like Lexus and Infinity, although Honda tends to share more components between their two lines than Toyota or Nissan.

If you're looking for speed, durability, and smoothness, plus okay gas mileage, then each of these companies has something for you. It all depends on what you prefer. Nissan has the Skyline GT-R, 300ZX Turbo, and 350Z Track, all in that era, all fast. The 350Z would likely be the cheapest, but it's also the least powerful. The 300ZX is very fast, reliable, and looks cool. The Skyline is the hardest to find in the United States, and is by far the most expensive (almost as much as a brand new 350Z). Acura only has the NSX, which is generally still way too pricey for the likes of most people. It's also hard to live with on a day-to-day basis, with little luggage room, a tiny cockpit, and only two seats. Honda has the S2000, with the high horsepower I-4 under the hood and a VTech engine. It's also Rear-Wheel Drive and only available as a convertible. I've heard that the high RPM shift can get annoying after a few months. Toyota has the Supra Turbo, possible the best out of all of these. It's All-Wheel Drive, blazingly fast, and very reliable. It's a middle-range price, below the NSX and Skyline. It has a sizeable trunk, excellent stability, and good gas mileage for this type of car. Plus, it looks kinda cool. Other cars not mentioned would include the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, Mazda RX-7 and RX-8, and Ford Mustang GT. The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 has goodies like All-Wheel Drive, twin turbos, Four-Wheel Steering, and enough power to outrun the Skyline. It's one of the harder ones to find, and rather pricey for a well-maintained example. The Mazdas are rotary powered, and also reliable, but tend to suck up gas rather quickly. They're both rated under 20 miles per gallon both city and highway. They're the most conventional cars, with useable rear seats and a good-sized trunk for a sportscar. They're also likely to be among the cheaper cars in this category The Ford Mustang GT (even though it's not an import) is my personal pick because it's durable, very reliable, and has excellent power. It also handles fairly well, gets gas mileage in the mid 20s on the highway, and has good interior and luggage room. It would likely fall in near the middle in price, on par with the Supra and 300ZX. On the downside, it's heavy and doesn't offer All-Wheel Drive or traction control, but instead relies on driving ability. Plus, you just can't beat the sound of a good-ol' V-8 rumbling at your competitors as you blow them away. If you want ease of use, buy the Toyota Supra Turbo or Honda S2000. If you need something you can live with daily, buy one of the Mazdas. If you can handle the power, go for the Ford Mustang or the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. If you have any more questions about these, or any other models, please feel free to ask.

acura is a subsidary of honda. Meaning Acura was created to appeal to upper middle class people. The same as Lexus is a higher end Toyota and Infinity is a higher end Nissan. All were created to appeal do a different niche or group of people

You answered your own question. You're absolutely correct. Acura is the premium brand to Honda, but to tell you the truth, I have a 2004 Honda Accord EX-L Coupe, V6, and I love it more than my friend's comparable Acura. But, they're both excellent makes.

The Honda / Acura relationship is like Toyota / Lexus.

Specifically the Acura namesake was created in 1986 and was important because it was the first Japanese luxury import into the US.

Hope it helps,
