If you have severe allergies, then it would be a bit wiser to rip the carpet out yourself. Wear a face mask, of course. Is it just plywood underneath because you didn't say. But all you have to do is to pull the kick molding off and grab the carpet from the corner. Usually it's only tacked on by a strip on the floor.

If it's just plywood underneath, then all you have to do is vac up the mess and get yourself some of that snap together wood flooring like at Home Depot or Lowes (if there is one in your area) It looks professional even when your not a pro. It is pretty easy to install and depending on the size of the room should only take you one afternoon.

Hope that helps.

you don't say whats UNDER the carpet. If it's wood floors, then take the carpet out and you can just keep the wood floors clean till you can afford to fix them. If it's concrete, then you can still take the carpet out (wear a mask, like a painter would), you can pain the floors with concrete paint and keep them clean that way.

Have you tried CLEANING the carpet with HypoAllergenic carpet cleaner ??? It works...I have severe allergies and I keep a carpet cleaner in my home and use hypoallergenic cleaner all the time.

Get someone to remove the carpet. Friends can do it quickly and without much effort if the furniture is removed first. Then go with Laminate flooring.
Mannigton is often on sale as low as $0.79 a sguare foot. With foam underlayment going for about $21.00 a roll
(one roll =100 square ft.)

Try asking at a carpet store. There is a protective, sticky backed plastic that is used to protect the carpet from traffic. It is pretty expensive and I haven't seen it in other than 3' widths.
