'The Oscars' are the official name of the gold-plated statues that are awarded at the Annual Academy Awards ceremony in the USA.
There are many debates about where 'The Oscars' originated. Some say that Bette Davis named it after her first husband. Others claim that Margaret Herrick, the Academy’s librarian, reminded her of her Uncle Oscar.

I believe that the credit for the name "OSCAR" goes to Margaret Herrick who in 1931 saw one of the statuettes and remarked that it looked like Her uncle "Oscar". The famous Columnist, Sidney Skolsky is reputed to have been present at the time and wrote the story up, saying that "Employees (of the Academy) have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette 'Oscar'". Prior to that time (1928-30) the statuette did not have an 'official nick name'.
Why not try the official "OSCAR" web site, at oscar.com.?

That's what they call the golden statuette that you receive. A little known fact is those Oscar guys are made in Ridgeway, Colorado. A little old western town with a population of about 700.

Everyone that has posted is wrong. The Oscars, are awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and have been since 1929 in Los Angeles. They are considered the leading judging body in Hollywood and for that reason, they are called the academy awards.
