After Service Pack 2 the firewall is enabled.

For automatic updates visit

http://update.microsoft.com

and turn them on

Or go to Security Center in Control Panel, same thing.

XP Home (No Service Packs) and XP Home (Service Pack 1) - no to firewall being enabled, yes to auto updates being turned on. Auto updates are set to advise if you want to download and will do so, only if you say yes.

XP Home (Service Pack 2) - Firewall and auto updates are enabled Will download in the background, and will not give you the opportunity to say yes or no.

You can manually adjust the options to turn off the firewall, and auto updates, or have the updated let you know updates are available, but give you the option to download or not.

Yes, the firewall and auto updates are by default turned on in Win XP.

You could turn them off, if you wanted to, but its probably a wise move to leave them be.

there should of been an option for turning on automatic updates when you first configured your computer after you bought it.

if you don't know if you did or not, you can check by

1. go to control panel
2. click on security center
3. check which windows options are turned on(firewall and automatic updates will be there)
