RE:
Can I safely run an air conditioner and a humidifier together?
While the AC does a fantastic job of cooling my room and removing muggy air, it does make the air a little too dry. I often wake up in the morning with a highly irritated nose and throat because of it. Will my AC burn out or be overworked if I run a humidifier while I sleep?

You should be able to run both. You have already figured out the main job of the AC is to de-humidify the room. That's what helps cool the room. Running the humidifier along with the A/C should not cause any problems but maybe adjusting the temp so it runs a little less. It may take a few nights to fine tune whats comfortable. Hope this helps you get a better nights sleep....
Sweet dreams.

Impossible from the Physics standpoint.
What you want is a rise in the Relative Humidity of the room.
RH is totally dependent on pressure and temperature, and a cooling of the temperature as air runs over the very cold AC coils results in a drop in RH.
So run the Humidifier if you wish, but it is a Waste of Effort because at that temp and pressure your air will only hold so many grains of moisture per cubic foot.
Try to raise the room temp even a few degrees, that will raise the RH and that will raise the RH and improve your dry air problem.

The best thing to do is to put your humidifier on a different wall plug in, than your air conditioner.
If you have Central Air Conditioning, there shouldn't be a problem. If it's a window A/C unit, just keep them separate.
One other suggestion I do have is if you can, get just a 'cool mister' like for a child's room when they have a stuffy nose, and put it on your dresser across the room. Just turn it on before you go to bed and that should work all night to keep moisture in the air for you.

no, the dehumidifying efect of an ac unit is simply a convenient side efect of cooling the air. it is just like a glass of ice water. the cold glass collects moisture and condences it into a liquid. if you run a humidifier it may cause your drain pump to run more(if it does not simply drain into a drain by gravity. mine has to pump the condensation over to a utility sink.) the only think it will hurt is your power bill from running the humidifier so much. so realy nothing can be hurt from it. by the way, I live in western Pennsylvania. it is currently -4F with a wind chill of -17F. where are you located that you are running AC, sure would like to enjoy the warmth over there.

If you are looking at central air, Amana (Goodman) are by far the best. I have been installing these units for 4 years. They are very dependable and won't cost a lot.
