x-intercept is when y=0, so you need to set these equal to zero and either factor or use the quadratic equation to find x.

x^2 - 3x - 2 = 0
does not factor, so you need to use quadratic equation.
[-b +- sqrt (b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

x = [3 +- sqrt ((-3)^2 - 4(1)(-2))] / 2(1)
x = [3 +- sqrt (9 + 8)] / 2
x = [3 +- sqrt 17 ]/2
x = 3.5616 and -0.5616

-------

x^2 - 2x + 4 = 0
doesn't factor...

x = [2 +- sqrt ((-2)^2 - 4(1)(4))]/2(1)
x = [2 +- sqrt (4 - 16)]/2
x = [2 +- sqrt (-12)]/2
x = [2 +- 2i*sqrt 3]/2
x = [1 +- i*sqrt 3]
