You don't need to locate him, but here are the rules regarding SSI retirement benefits:

If you divorced after at least 10 years of marriage, you can collect retirement benefits on your former spouse's Social Security record if you are at least age 62 and your former spouse is entitled to or receiving benefits. If you remarry before age 60, you generally cannot collect benefits on your former spouse's record unless your later marriage ends.

You don't have to locate him. All you need is his Social Securitiy number (check your marriage license if you don't know what it is). Also, go to Social Security office or call them and get the pamphlet "What Every Woman Should Know". Basically, if you were married at least 10 years and you have not remarried, you are entitled to a percentage of his benefits - he doesn't get a choice on this. SocSec will do the math for you when you apply for benefits. If you get more money from his work record than your own, that's what you will get.

You do not have to locate your ex-husband at all! If you are approaching 62, you will need to contact the Social Security office to fill out papers for your benefit. If you were married 10 years, you can either draw on your own work record, or get a percentage of his, whichever is greater.

If he should die, you will then need to contact Soc. Sec. again to file for widow's benefits, which will be in addition to what you will receive at 62.

Talk to your Soc. Sec. office! They will do what is best for you!

CamyDad is right, however I believe you can check with your local Social Security Office in case you have more questions and of course need to fill out papers. Best of Luck
