1 L is the standard metric measurement for the volume of a liquid. All measurements above this standard come to us from Greek and all those below from Latin.
So kilo (Greek) means x 1,000 whereas mili (Latin) mean 1,000 part thereof. 1 mili-L of water is 1 cubic cm. A calorie is the amount of heat needed to raise1 cm of water by 1 degree C.

1000mL is a litre so 500mL is half a litre or 0.5 L
little m is milli meaning thousandth where as bigM is mega and means one million
but you knew that, It is a real bugger to get a handle on those figures took me ages to get them.
