Sounds like you're demanding more memory than the system has. In that case it uses hard drive space as virtual memory, and it's horribly slow at it.

Try Control/Alt/Delete and look at the task manager. Check on the Performance tab and see what the memory use is. If it exceeds the actual memory, then that's what is going on.

What makes you think the motherboard isn't working correctly?

You may have a bunch of spyware operating that takes up a bunch of memory. Get Ad-aware for free and see if there's something to clean up.

If it's standard memory, either look into a memory upgrade (which isn't really that expenseve, and will make a big performance difference), or keep the number of simultaneously running operations down.
