Where did the expression cottonmouth come from?

Did it come from cotton pickers in the fields?
Did they put cotton balls in their mouths?

It came from the poisonous snake the cotton mouth, when it opens wide before striking the inside of its mouth is white colored.

we used to get, "cottonmouth" after smoking weed because pot dries out your mouth, and it feels like you've got a mouthful of cotton.
