Compassion is intrinsically passive, introverted, and can be acted on, but is not an action. Instead, it is a virtue--or a quality. Violence is an action or a set of actions. In general, actions have a greater impact than the quality of one's demeanour lest that quality is acted upon.
Regardless of how violence tends to engender more violence and spread like a rash--even without the negative connotation associated with violence, it is still more deed-oriented than compassion.
That difference between the two is the fundamental reason why it has a greater impact.

Violence affects people negatively, to be sure. I don't believe it has a greater impact except in the short term though. Think of any great people in history, and they are the ones who show compassion and nonviolent natures. Society was affected greatly by Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Buddha. Think of the marvel people felt when the Amish, last summer, forgave and embraced the family of the killer who slew all the children in their school. No, violence only has short term effects. We hear about it more because it goes against the basic principles most people seek to live by. Compassion and peace are the everlasting virtues with the most impact on society. It is just that we hear about them less.
