In the midwestern states, what is the temperature that defines whether school is in session or not? The weather channel says that in my area it will be 1 degree farenheit with a -30 degree windchill. I would prefer more accurate answers rather than guesses. Thank you to all!

best I can do to answer your question is tell you that the last time they closed down my school district it was -10 degrees Fahrenheit. We've had school in -2 degree whether though. a -30 degree windchill is considered dangerous so even though it will be 1 degrees the windchill might make the difference in the decision.

Well I live in Northeast Ohio and they called 99% of the schools off for tomorrow already around noon today [including mine...and we haven't had a snow day in 2 years] and its about 1 degree out w/ a wind chill of -10. It depends on how many students have to walk and how far [our district is 2 miles], if the buses can work, etc. They can't possibly send kids out if it's -30 wind chill though. Frostbite will set in too quickly.

I think that at that weather, than school should be cancled or delayed. My school, in Pennsylvania, has a 2 hour delay right now, and I'm thinking it's because there is a severe wind warning, with temperatures around the single digits, and a wind chill factor bringing it down to 15 to 20 below zero. I'm guessing if it's a good distance below your winter average, than school will be closed.

Sorry, it depends on your location/school district. You're always free to keep them home if you feel it's dangerous. -30F seems kind of hazardous to me, especially for kids.

Areas that are more used to cold temps tend to set the limit lower. I come from New England, and I can't really remember school being late/suspended for extreme cold, but now I live father south, and it's quite common here, for temps we'd deal with farther north.

Frostbite danger for exposed flesh in 45 minutes or less starts kicking in at -10F (no wind) to 5F with a 50mph wind, according to US Army safety charts.

Another site shows a 15 minute limit for anything below a temp equiv to -19F.
