i just got a palm treo 680, in order to go back or to the previous menu do i have to always push home?

Yes ma'am. That is whats confusing about being a first-time treo user. Theres no "back" button. Once you get the hang of it, you'll get used to just pressing "home". It actually depends on what you have open. For example if you have a text message open, you can just press "done" and it'll go back to the list of other texts..and then press "home" if you need to get out of that. Youll eventually find that lacking a "back" button isn't so bad, especially since Treos can do so much than a regular cell phone.
