I have traveled to many countries and everywhere I go, people hate Americans. They think they big on themselves and cocky and arrogant and rude and stupid and fat and everybody talks about George Bush , how they hate him and I just get tired of it! I almost hate to travel now!
I have also noticed that many Americans are critical of George Bush and are also Critical of Americans . When I go to Europe or Asia or when I talk to people from Australia , I NEVER hear them say they hate their goverment or apologize for their country, but I have to all the time, even though dont think it is right to label me just because i LIVE in USA. But I also think that Many Americans are becoming ashamed to be American and many hate our government. I think there is a lot of Self- Hating Americans out there. I dont think it is right. since that is stupid and ignorant to judge somebody on where they just happen to live. I dont run this country, I just live here!

That's a really good question ... I think a lot of them feel the need to 'connect' with other nations/cultures, and then overdo it - the whole "I'm Irish on one side and German on the other", while they're just trying to establish some kind of a link, it always sets my teeth on edge and I always say, "but actually you're American". Yes, I suppose I do try to put them in their place, but it's BECAUSE that's their place/country/politics/culture and we have ours.

In a way I feel sorry for them - despite the technological innovations that have come from the US (or been funded by the US), they seem to still feel culturally inadequate, they do not have millenia of culture behind them. (Or if they do, they'd rather not acknowledge it because it later involved mass genocide of many native American tribes by incoming Europeans.)

It always strikes me as such an insular country. Perhaps that's why some of them overdo their efforts to 'reach out', as it were.

They've got to get rid of that President of theirs, though. He's really holding them back.

Lol. you simply don't listen to them enough.

Next time you travel, don't speak. Then you will hear them ***** abou their own country as well.

I have yet to meet a SINGLE american who is Ashamed of being american. A few do however have issues with their government but that is expected because the US is a democracy and part of that is politcical decent.

The US have NEVER pretended to have 100 percent voter approval unlike dictatorships.

We live in a democracy, and as much as we hate Bush (I know I do), the country voted for him, and we are stuck with him. thats why it is important to pick a president who is worth a damn, because he is the premier representative of this nation. Anyway, when you travel, make it a point to try to assimilate yourself with whatever culture/country you are visiting. Don't expect them to always speak English, etc.

Europeans/Asians/Aussies don't have to apologize for their countries because their countries are not the leading world power. America is. And the world ALWAYS looks to America to have an opinion on the current goings on and world events. Because we are #1 when it comes to shaping international affairs, we have a duty to the world to do it right so we dont screw the rest of the world over. When we do something stupid, we must make amends for it.

Thank George Bush partly, he did wonders for our foreign policy. I understand your point but when I went to other countries everybody wanted Levi's Jeans, Harley Davison merchandise, and Golds Gym Tshirts from me. Some hate us but a lot want to emulate us.

Actually, in Europe one gets the impression that Americans in the USA like to pat themselves on the back.

sadly i don't like america anymore, and I'm from Oklahoma. I'm moving to Denmark this fall, hopefully. There's just too much horrible stuff here, like our awful health care and our low pay and the cost of colleges. I think our government is just a bunch of lazy people that are paid way too much to do way too little. Not all people around the world are happy with their governments either, but most countries are happier with theirs than america is.

I work with a load of gung-ho, "redneck" types. It has been quite amusing over the last few months to watch them trying to distance themselves from Bush, whereas a year ago, he coud do no wrong as far as they were concerned.
