If you're going for your CPA, expect crap pay and opressive hours while you do your internship. The payoff comes when you get the CPA. $40k would be way low end and the sky's the limit in private practice.

I had an ex-GF that came out of college with an accounting degree and landed a $40K/year job. This is in Texas, to boot, where salaries are probably on the low side. From what I understand, accountants are in pretty good demand. You probably made a very wise major choice.

Depends on where you are. Right now there is a shortage of accountants and thus entry salaries are pretty good. In NM third rate firms are paying $40-50k starting and giving $5-10k starting bonuses. But, as the others have stated, you work your butt off the first few years.

You will probably start out around 30k a year. If you get your masters for an extra 1-2 years of school you will probably double that amount if you pass the exam and become a CPA.
