In high school, I learned about a tribe (in Africa, I think) where occasionally, one of the girls (physiologically speaking) becomes a boy at puberty when the testciles drop. Then, the girl begins to live as boy instead. Does anyone know the name of the tribe or where I can learn more about this?

I believe that is in the Dominican Republic they are called Guevedoches meaning "balls at twelve." or "c ock at twelve". There is this village there where this trans-gender gene is very common and many of the girls become boys around puberty.

Interesting... seems there's a genetic mutation in that community, which causes intersexed humans to be born there often enough that the people there have a name for it. The testicles don't "drop off" as one answerer put it; instead, they descend.
Intersexed humans are born more frequently than most people think, estimates are around 1 to 3 in 1000 live births. This is about 3 times more common than Down's Syndrome. So if you've ever met anyone with Down's Syndrome, chances are you've met three times that many people who were born intersexed.

This isn't a tribe, it's a birth defect. I've heard of it, but I don't remember the details. I'm not sure if it's regarded as intersex or not. Intersex isn't common, but affects all populations.
