I am traveling abroad with infant. Planning to take as much frozen breastmilk as possible. How do I keep it frozen for 8hrs give or take?

I figured I could buy several soft-sided coolers and use dry ice to keep breastmilk frozen. Then I can easily put the coolers in my bags.

Questions are;

- Will breastmilk be safe? will it stay completely frozen?
- Do x-rays or scans bags go thru affect the milk?
- Is it safe to store milk with dry ice and close the coolers tightly?
- Any suggestions?

Thx!

I would call the airline to see what they would suggest. I'm sure that you're not the first nursing mother they've had on their airline.

You'd have to check with the airlines but, you can only bring so much on board the aircraft and are only able to take so much checked baggage. It may not be worth the hassle, I wouldn't even worry about bringing frozen milk with you, I would just breastfeed like normal during the flight.(Unless there is a reason that you need all the frozen milk once you are abroad). Just bring your pump with you. There is also risk of bags being punctured, through transporting bags to plane (if you check the bags) ANd on some planes the cargo hold is not pressurized and that would result in leaks as well.

Hi - I had the same situation. I didn't try the dry ice, so I can't speak to that. I did use a medela breast milk cooler that worked GREAT. I think it is sold with the Pump in Style, but you might also be able to get it separately from a lactation consultant. It is supposed to keep breast milk for 24 hours. My flight was about the same (plus airport time) and I noticed a little bit of thawing, but the milk was still very solid. Also - just tell airport security what you're carrying. I flew out of D.C. and they were pretty nice about it. Maybe a little uncomfortable, but nice.

The best thing I found to use for breastmilk was those little juice bottles (4 oz) and freeze them. they stay frozen for several hours especially in a cooler. I have driven in mid summer 6 hours and they where still frozen I see no problem. Dry ice is safe to use. i do not know about the airlines though sorry.

do no longer placed breastmilk in a glass field for any reason! The fat in breastmilk adhere to the glass, so your toddler would not get those mandatory food once you feed the expressed milk to them. you mustn't upload sparkling breastmilk on good of already frozen for storage. once you place it in a field, write the date that it became into pumped on that field. you may shop breastmilk wisely in the refrigerator for 5 days, and as much as six months in the freezer (as long simply by fact the freezer is a minimum of 0 levels F; if it relatively is warmer than 0 levels, you may shop it frozen for 3 months; if it relatively is -20 levels or under, you may shop it frozen for a 365 days). Do you have any ice cube trays? an decrease priced thank you to freeze and keep breastmilk is to place it in ice cube trays, and whilst it relatively is thoroughly frozen, pop it out and placed it into freezer zip storage luggage (and write the date on it, so which you be attentive to that's oldest (to apply first) and that's maximum cutting-edge).

I avoid the whole mess and just breastfeed my baby on a plane. It is crowded, but you'll be fine. How will you get milk through security? Taking a baby to the airport is hard enough without a bunch of coolers and dry ice. ;) Good luck!

Dry Ice is a great idea. You'll have to check with the airlines to make sure that you can take it though. They have a bunch of new regulations regarding liquids. X rays won't affect the milk.

You should call the airline and ask what they will and won't allow. Some airlines may not allow dry ice for safety reasons.

It also depends on whether you are taking the breastmilk in carry-on or checking it.

Once you know if the x-rays may hurt it or not.. and if there is no reasons for keeping you from bringing it on board I would simply ask the stewartess if she could put it in there fridge... I would also consider breastfeeding or pumping as a backup if need be..
