i doubt it espesially if the other person is fighting it

Of course they can. But it does depend what kind of felony was committed.
Those who committ violent crimes or sex crimes would certainly be barred from having custody of a child.
Those who committed a felony like fraud, tax evasion, etc. would probably not be barred.
