What I was always told as an undergraduate (and what I tell my own students) is that two hours for every hour in class is the expectation.

I was told by several professors when I was in college you have to study 1 hour per credit hour a week so if you have a 3 credit class 3 hours a week minimum so if you are taking 15 credits a semester that is 15 hours a week of studying.

Usually, the study rate is for every 1 hour of lecture, you should study for 1.5 hours. This does not include assigned homework, but if you factor that in, you are looking at about 3 hours of studying/homework for 1 hour of lecture.

so, there is the expected number of hours... and there is reality...

some classes take more time... and others take less...

it all depends upon how easy it is for you and what the professors expectations are...
