But he is overweight and has drank excessively for years. Sometimes I worry that he might not survive until they are 18. Would my children receive an income from his social security benefits if this were to happen?

Yes you can file for benefits for them if he were to pass away. You just need to go through the Social Security Department and they will help you.

They would receive something from Social Security, but it wouldn't be livable. At that time, you would have to supplement to make sure they received a livable amount of money and one for you after the kids are gone.

Yes, they would receive social security, and you might too, depending on how many years you were together as man and wife.

No. Child support is based on your ex husband's income period. If he doesn't survivie until they are 18 that's the breaks. There was no guarantee of him surviving till they were 18 when you were married.

Social security would go to the children if he doesn't already have another spouse as his beneficiary.
Maybe he's trying to kill himself...

absolutely. i personally know several cases of this right now.. the father passed (from poor health habits, never wanting to see a doctor, didnt like meds, etc) and the children recieve SS until they are 18.

if it ever happens, go to your local SS office and inquire as to how to get the paperwork started.

no worries.

some links for you... keep them, you may need them one day.
