when the US is the only country that plays football? it's just silly. that's like me saying i'm the world champion of clipping my nails flawlessly since i'm the only person that measures how flawless i clip my nails.

well, it's not only the NFL. even after the NBA finals, they say "world champions" and we all know winning the NBA finals doesn't mean you're world champions. maybe when you win the olympics. i agree w/ the person that says that the US thinks that the world revolves around them.

this has nothing to do w/ me hating american sports. i actually like football.

exactly....theres no football anywhere else in the world...therefore they're the only football champions in the world....world champions

The US is not the only the country that plays football. Many other countries play football, such as Canada, but no Canadian teams are in the NFL.
I don't see what the big deal is about calling them world champions. Why do people have to keep asking this question? Everyone is always hating on American sports. If you don't like it ... don't watch it.

its a form of self anointing. They are the World Champion because no other pro team in the world (if there is such a thing) could challenge them. I dont recall in pro hockey someone calling themselves World Champions but Im not a big follower of those guys either.

It's because the NFL is the top league in all of football (not soccer "football" but our kind of football). The NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB are the top leagues for their respective sports. That's way they all call there winners world champs.

Typically American. To be called world champion other countries should be competing.

you can be the world champion if you want to. Just do whatever is considered competition better than anyone else in the world and you are the world champ!!

Eh. We like to think that we are the supreme rulers of the good free world. So why not call ourselves World Champions?
I think we should just be Champions period. World kind of stretches it...
