I am 5 months pregnant now but would like to know how far or close should my hospital be when I begin labour so that I get there in time.

Well i have heard that in the last trimester you should never be more than an hour away from your hospital. Good luck.

Doesn't matter as long as you make some timed trial runs during the day and traffic times to know exactly how long it will take and where you are to park and enter. Visit the hospital, see the rooms, ask about private rooms, their security system, visiting hours and rooming in with baby policy. See what sleep arrangments they have for the father of the baby.
Ask your doctor or go on line and read about the difference between true labor and false labor so you'll know. Towards the due date make sure someone knows how to time contractions with a second hand and ask your doctor at what point should you come in. If it's your first baby the labor will be a lot longer. Also your pain tolerance is important, make sure you get there in time to get an epidural!

You can stay at home even if the hospital is a little ways away. Just make sure you know the signs of labor. Usually for first baby you don't have to go in until contractions are 5 mins apart, so if it takes a little while to get to the hospital then I would leave when they are like 7-10 mins apart to make sure you get there in time for baby to be born.

You have another 4 months to worry about that. And you can get an ambulance from anywhere, so long as you're within 2 hours of a hospital :P

No labor goes for less than 1 hour unless you've had 10 children before.

my hospital was about 30 -35 minutes away. I made it both times. i was having contractions 3-5 min apart with the first and made it and still didn't have her until about 12 hours later. the second time my water broke and i didn't have contractions until they gave me something that time i drove myself and ran some errands on may up to the hospital. if it is your first you should be just fine. if you are within 30 mins i think that is close enough.

That's a personal decision for you to make. Labor can last a very short time to a very long time. There is no way to tell if you'll be in labor for 1 hour or 16 hours. Typically, if it's your first, you'll be in labor for a while, I was only in acive labor for 2.5 hours with my son. AN hour after I got the epidural, I was ready to start pushing.

The closest hospital for me is an hour long drive. My last labor was 3 hours. I'm thinking the car is going to be the birthplace of my child!

It's best if you're less than an hour away from a hospital in the last month.

Good luck and congratulations!

Mine is 30 minutes away, but there is one close by too just in case of an emergency.
