well he's a smart man but actually IQs are misleading since they dont represent all areas on one specific subject...

I don't know the exact number, but I guarantee you it's very high. Conceiving an operating system is no trivial matter.
Twelve to Fifteen IQ points is one standard deviation. If Gates is smarter than 1 in a thousand people, that put him in the 140 - 150 range. He can't be lower than that.
On the high end, it has to be less than guys like Sir Isaac Newton. Newton never had his IQ tested as I don't believe the concept existed in his day. But, Newton invented Calculus, the laws of kinetics, invented the modern telescope.
A truly scary intellect Newton had. The highest recorded IQ is something like 200 or so. Let's say Newton was 200.
Gates should be somewhere in the middle. He's probably in the 170 range. That would put him 4 or 5 standard deviations above the mean. Not too shabby.
