This May I am closing on a new house that I bought in Colorado, and put an ad in craigslist wanting roommates. Immediately I got responses, mostly from European women with atrocious spelling and grammar stating they want to rent a room, they want to send payment right away, and want my address. Is this some new scam from abroad that I am not aware of? Two of them were Swiss or German girls from west Africa. Coincidence? I'm testing the waters for good people, and would love some advice. Thanks.

Scam or not, I would never agree to a roomate without meeting them in person first. If the room is still available when they can visit in person then they can give you their deposit.

Yes, it's a scam. You will get a check written for thousands over the amount. There will be some excuse for the mistake. You will be requested to wire the overage back to them. Your wire transfer will go through. Then you will find out that the check did not clear. You don't get any of your money, plus you are out whatever you wired back to the scammer.

BEWARE !!!!!
If they
a) want to send you a cheque larger than any deposit you might ask for, and request that you send them the "change", it's a scam
b) ask for your bank details to arrange a transfer, it's a scam.
Please be very careful, and CERTAINLY do NOT give them ANY information that might enable them to access your bank!!!!!!
