I lived in Florida at the time in Lakeland between Tampa and Orlando. I didn't really experience Katrina but I experienced tropical storms and hurricanes. The most frightening I experienced had to be in 2004, it was Hurricane Jeanne. I lived in a brand new home, the wind was pulling the french doors open. There was so much rain and wind gusts and clouds that looked very suspicious, but no tornado dropped out in our area. Then the wind did some damage to the oak tree next to our house. Soon my husband and I heard a snap and looked as to our horror we saw a very large branch start breaking off onto our house. My husband being crazy decided to brave the storm and tie a rope around it, so when it did fall on our house, it would fall gently. It did eventually fall on the house and we cut the entire tree down after the hurricane went further north and just brought us rain. We lost power for 10 hours and it was hot and balmy. But of all the years I lived in FL that had to be the worst. Hope this helps!

Not a hurricane or tornado, but I was in the middle of a downburst when I was young.
The winds came screaming off the field across the road from our house. Even though the house was closed up tight, absolutely everything was covered by a fine coating of dirt. We also had dirt in our hair, on our skin, in our teeth. It was gross. The power was knocked out for 5 days, trees were down everywhere. Some houses were damaged. Our powerlines were pulled right out by the socket where they connected to the house to get to the shop.
It was pretty fantastic, I enjoyed myself during the ordeal. Then again, I'm a pretty big weather nerd.

I was involved in a 60mph windstorm at summer camp in the early 1990s. All the tepees in the field around me were destroyed. i was also caught in another severe thunderstorm at a zoo with heavy downpours and damage to weak structures. Sorry, that is the best I got for Ohio weather.
