makes an awful grinding sound during the spin cycle. Also, clothes are still wet after spinning. Time for a new washer?

Yes, with a 12-yr-old washer, you ought to buy a new one. If you repair it this time, another repair will be in your near future. Don't worry... the next one will last a long time too!

DON'T GET A NEW ONE! You have the best washer ever made. If you buy another it will not last as long. I sounds like your water pump is out. A new one will cost about 50 bucks. While you're in there you should replace the coupler for about $15 too. The hardest part of the repair is wrestling the cabinet off and on.

By the way, 110 is only the prefix of your model. Near that will be a seven digit number that is really what you need. Odds are the pump is a part # 3363394 and the coupler is a 285753. You can buy them on line or at any distributor.

Sounds like a bearing, though I couldn't say which. If you're handy, you can try to determine where the noise is coming from (keep your hands and kids away if you run it with the back off) and replace the part.

You can get replacement parts for Sears (and other major brand appliances) from sears.com, click on 'parts' on the left side of the home page. You'll need the model number and occasionally the serial number. They'll ship direct to you, a Sears store, or you can save on the shipping by picking it up at a Sears parts warehouse.

It's much cheaper to install the replacement part than to buy a whole new washer, if you can do the replacement yourself. Or maybe you have a mechanically-oriented friend that owes you a favor?
