We are building an international space station to:

-Find out the effects of space and weightlessness on the human body over long term periods in space.

-Do some experiments that will further our knowledge of plant life in space and how to grow our own food up their.

-Experiments to see how chemicals react in space.

-See if it is possible to establish an independent space colony someday.

-Other experiments and tests.

It was built because the United States was already close to beginning construction on the space station "Freedom" what would make the Russian Mir look pathetic. Once it was clear that there was no real reason for propaganda, it became the "International" Space Station for peaceful purposes. I say "International" because while it is "international" as far as who is being allowed to use it, it is not "international" in almost any way beyond that. The current estimated cost to the US and NASA is $100 billion. The total cost of the rest of the station being put up by our "partners?" About $26 billion. Yeah. It started as a pissing match, and has turned into a joke and sink for American dollars. There have been *no* important discoveries up there. Not even a little. Even if they did... if you can only build something in low Earth orbit, and even at that all you have is a little station, what possible use can we ever get out of our money? You're not going to build "dilithium crystals" up in space, then bring them down here, because they're not meant to operate in Earth gravity.

It is an attempt to justify keeping the space shuttle flying, more than anything else.
It would have made more sense to invest in a replacement to the shuttle, one designed without the interference of politicians who kept asking for the design to be made cheaper, to the point it ended up costing more that it would have.

One day we will all need to leave Earth or die, as the sun turns into a red giant, boiling the oceans away. These are the first, baby steps.
