It's a low incidence pervasive developmental disability that occurs on a spectrum.
"Low incidence" means that it occurs infrequently in the general population.
"Pervasive" means that it affects all parts of the person's life.
"Developmental" means (in a nutshell) that it occurs fairly early in a person's life (by 30 months or so) and it affects how the person progresses through the developmental milestones.
"Spectrum" means that it can have all levels of impact--from minimal to profound.

I am attaching a link to the DSM IV criteria for diagnosing autism:

http://www.autism-watch.org/general/dsm.shtml

Other disorders within the autism 'spectrum' include pervasive developmental disorder and Asperger's Syndrome. As for the incidence of autism, in some areas, the rates are higher than 1 in 166. We are in the midst of an epidemic and you don't get an epidemic of a purely genetic disorder. Autism appears to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Autism is a neurological disability based in the brain. The core deficits are in communication and in socialization. Is it one of five developmental disorders, and is not as rare as you'd think. More than 1.5 million Americans have autism, and it is found across every racial, ethnic or social boundary, regardless of family income, education or lifestyle.

It is increasing at the rate of 10% a year, according to the US Dept of Ed.

This is way to deep of a subject to ask for help here. I would first talk to a preacher or counselor. I have always been a Christian, and a Methodist follower. God does not promise that we live perfect lives as Christians or non-Christians. And just because you don't believe in God, doesn't mean God does not exist. It just means that you choose to ignore him. Autism doesn't mean anything in the eyes of God. It means something in the eyes of man. God knows your soul perfectly, he knew you before you were born. He knows you 10 years from now, and in spite of your autism. He sends the Holy Spirit to speak to you and for you to speak with when you are struggling. Always know, Christians believe that Jesus is never far away, ESPECIALLY in times of struggle, like with Autism. I have an Autistic son, and God loves him very much and will watch over him always for me, whether I am there or not.

All good answers. However, autism is no longer a low incidence disorder. 1 out of every 166 children have autism. That's near epidemic!
