Poppadum is actually a type of fried bread, made out of wheat or rice, sometimes with spices thrown in. It starts out as a flat piece of dough that is quickly deep fried in oil.

Poppadum is associated with Indians, so maybe that's why it was used against Shilpa Shetty.

Poppadum, I think is Papadam, a fried or roasted fritter that is served with Indian food, especially South Indian food. In the North the same thing is calle Paapad. As a word it wouldnt be so but it would become a slur depending on the tone used. Its like calling some American "James Hotdog".
