I had mine fitted two days ago. It was a sharp pain when they measured my uterus and then another when they inserted it. But this was only for 2-3 seconds and if you can handle pain for a couple of seconds for 10 years of protection, then go for it. I haven't had any kids or been pregnant before. I was pretty cramped for the first three hours after insertion, but they get less and less as the days go by. I would recommend staying home that day. I had it inserted on the third day of my period, which is supposed to be more comfortable because your cervix is lower. I am still bleeding a bit but nothing that needs more than a thin maxipad. Hope this helps.

HI - my experience of the coil was almost entirely negative. It caused me varying degrees of discomfort for almost six months, and it also kept abrading my partners bits (at the time the doctor said it was not possible and that he was imagining it although there was physical evidence). After a year I developed an odd odour and finally demanded the removal of the offending coil. I have to say, convincing the doctor to take it out took some doing. When it was removed the end of the tail things were like thick fishing line cut at an oblique angle and very, very sharp. My partner had not been imagining it and the strange odour went in a couple of days. It took almost a year before my periods started again.

I had my 1st coil fitted after the birth of my 1st child 26 years ago, then another after my 2nd child 24 years ago. Through the years i have had it renewed. No problems with them apart from it made me bleed heavily when on my periods. An absolute nightmare. About 7 years ago i felt so so unwell. I went to the doctors and they rushed me to hospital to have a blood transfusion. I had lost SO much blood on my periods that if i had have had one more period, then i wouldn't be here today to tell this, as i'd lost loads of blood slowly over the months/years. I had to have 3 bags of blood slowly transfused into me over 3 days. I now have the Mirena coil fitted which has virtually stopped my periods for the last 7 years, i just get a little discharge now and again. Its the best thing i have ever done, you don't have to worry about contraception and they last for years. You CAN NOT feel the ends of the coil unless you virtually put your fingers way way up to feel them. Its virtually impossible to feel them. You just need to get the nurse at your local doctors surgery to check that its still in place every year. So i would go for it, but if you lose LOADS of blood, keep an eye on yourself. To have one put in, you feel a slight aching, very similar to a period pain. Good Luck.

Yes I had the Merena coil fitted 2 years ago as I was having really heavy periods. It was no worse than having a smear test. It has been brilliant, I hardly have any periods now and it lasts for five years. And don't worry you don't have to try and feel if it is still there by trying to find the string hanging out of your cervix, not unless you have a willing partner.

I have had a coil now for 18 years, not the same one obviously, thing this one is my 4th.
Best options for me, it would drive me mad trying to remember to take a pill every day, When you are getting it taken out and another one in all there is, is a sharp pain in your tummy but its gone once the coil is in.
In 18 yrs the only problem i've had is i got an infection on the last one a bit like thrush but once the coil was taken out it cleared up

I had it fitted, it was agony from start to finish and it was eventually removed during an operation. But everyone's different so what I experienced isn't relevant to you. I would actually recommend a coil, it's a lot less hassle than a lot of other methods of contraception, I've heard a lot about it working well for period problems and you can't forget to take it. It just didn't work out very well for me.

Hi. I've got the coil. It's fine. You get different kinds - I've just got a normal one and had it for nearly 5 years. My pal got a hormone one and had really heavy periods with it.

Try it and see - if you don't like it get it removed.
