Snakes do not have ears outside the head as we do, nor do they have ear openings but they do have the part called the inner ear, inside the head. When a person or animal walks, it makes vibrations that pass through the earth to the body of the snake. The vibrations pass through the skin and muscles of the snake to a bone connected to its inner ear, from which the snake can “hear.” Snakes can also hear noises or vibrations that travel through the air in the same way.

Nope, don't have ears like the others were saying. The difference here is that I checked this out by experimenting. I have a red tail boa and when he was facing the other way, I screamed at the top of my lungs, nothing...I barely tapped the edge of the cage, he was up like a shot looking around for what was coming near him. Some also have heat pits near the front of their head that act like heat sensors to help the detect prey. Great sense of smell with their tongues too.

No they do not pick up sound with the tongue. For vibrations to be felt by a snake they pick vibrations up with there upper and lower jaw. The vibration are picked up from both the substrate and the air. After it is picked up by the jaw bone it travels to the brain for processing.

dont know about the technical biological answer but my corn snake can tell the difference between my voice and my mothers. if i havent fed him and he's hungry he doesnt respond to me but begs to my mums voice! i think he knows "dinner time" means food and "exercise" means he's getting out of the tank. maybe that's just what i'd like to think though
