When we say to begin a new day, we always mean the mornings so night always follows the day.

Day begins first. Because after zero hour it is concerned as morning. Because to complete the whole day it takes 24 hours. And once the 24th hour is complete the very next second is called has morning or day.

night only.initially there was no solid mater in the universe and no light could exis without matter conaining electron and protons which contained photons . the light particles. light being made up of photons there should have been darkness only before the birth of light. the energy particles of free electron and protons in the early universe have combined togethr with the help of electro magnetic waves and microwaves to create matter. light came into being only when the these energy particles combined to create matter of all sorts and lead to the Big Bang . The stars were born of the result of nuclear fission of the matter inside the center of the galactic matter of infinite density that could attract even the light waves into itself. .so light was born of the night that existed before the light was born.Even when light came into being , objects should have experienced light on one side of them and darkness ( night ) on the other side of any galactic matter .As reagards the earth , it should have light on one side and darkness on the othere side .

Depends on your frame of reference.
Now if you are talking since the begining of time... I would say night. "then there was light..."
