When she took over England it was BROKE and had no military.
The country was fractured over who should and should not rule. People were dying over the war between Catholic and the Church of England. Her Father created the Church of England, then her sister, Bloody Mary tried to destroy it after her father died and restore the Catholic Church, return all of its property, etc. Only Queen Mary knows why she didn't have Princess Elizabeth killed outright. She hated her simply because Elizabeth's Mother, Anne Boleyn had her own mother, Queen Catherine dethroned and sent to exile in a windy, run-down castle where she died.
She considered Princess Elizabeth a bastard child of the King and not a true Princess, as did all true Catholics in England. She (Elizabeth) had ALOT to overcome when she became Queen, to heal the country and repair its armies, navies, and restore trust in the rulers.
When she died, it WAS the world power.
