It can cause a condition called Aldosteronism where there will be excess sodium in the blood which will increase the fluid content in the blood causing hypertension and edema. It also causes excretion of potassium in the urine which can cause muscle weakness, a decrease in neuron activity and possibly paralysis.

Major role is done by sodium potassium pumps by utilising ATP. Other active carriers are also involved to restore remaining ions, most of them utilising energy in form of ATP. Cell's major energy sources (upto 70%) are utilised to restore normal ionic concentration, which is against concentration gradient.
