You don't...the best way to whiten is get trays made at the dentist and use a hydrogen peroxide gel whitener...I like NiteWhite Turbo because it is only 3 nights overnight. However, hydrogen peroxide does have multiple health benefits and you should swish with it a couple of nights a week.

I use peroxide and baking soda (not baking powder). I mix the two (using a plastic teaspoon to measure 2-3 spoons of the powder and 4-5 of the same spoon to measure the peroxide into a small bowl or onto a small plate. Mix to make a paste. You should be able to stir easily, but it's not runny or watery. Use extra peroxide if the mix is still dry, but not too much, or extra baking powder if you add too much peroxide (which is why I use the spoon or you could keep that up forever). When the two touch, they will foam, but it doesn't mean anything is wrong.

The paste will also help you keep it on the teeth, although as you spit & rinse a bit will get on your gums. The taste is really not that great, so I follow it (after a quick water rinse) with a little mouthwash...make sure you like the flavor of the mouthwash, because it will make it easier to put up with the taste of the mixture if you know you're going to swish a little mint (or whatever flavor) afterward.

Don't overdo the brushing with this, once or twice a day is sufficient (I do this morning & bedtime), and don't leave it on too long (I brush for 3 minutes). Patience. Don't try to hurry by leaving it on a long time or brushing longer. And whatever you do, don't swallow it.

My teeth are stained from drinking coffee and tea, so I began using the peroxide and baking soda to brighten them up. There have been some very slight brightening, nothing big yet. I don't know if this will have any effect on teeth stained due to medication.

And of course it's always advisable to check with a dentist if you are looking for major results or faster results, or even to make sure that what I am telling you is okay. Or you can just use those toothpastes that aready have it mixed in. You can find those at your local supermarket. Don't forget you can check out tooth bleaching by dentists online, but if you are unseasy about this or have questions about other options, visit a dentist you trust. Hope this Helps!

Also: I haven't tried a metal spoon (or any metal dishes at all) with this, so I don't know what may happen. I just used plastic spoons just to be safe (I hand wash my spoon in hot water when I'm done mixing so I an reuse it, and I throw it away weekly and start with a new one).

With caution!
Hydrogen peroxide is a bleach and it can bleach your gums as well.

It is much better to get the proprietry line that has a mouthguard to contain the strip up against the teeth and not affect the rest of the mouth. It is also faster than the mouth rinse method. which half the action is wasted, due to awful taste and affects on the rest of the mouth.
