I just watched "Pulp Fiction" all the way through for the first time. What the hell is in that briefcase? Money? Gold? Drugs? What do you think it is?

This is the Urban legend behind the briefcase story.

If you all are anything like me then you had no idea what was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. So, through a friend of a friend of a friend who had a two hour conversation with Quentin Tarantino himself, I now know, and I thought I would pass along the information because it makes the movie even 100 times better than it already is.
Remember the first time you were introduced to Marsellus Wallace. The first shot of him was of the back of his head, complete with band-aid. Then, remember the combination of the lock on the briefcase was 666. Then, remember that whenever anyone opened the briefcase, it glowed, and they were in amazement at how beautiful it was; they were speechless. Now, bring in some Bible knowledge, and remember that when the devil takes your soul, he takes it from the back of your head.

Yep, you guessed it. What is the most beautiful thing about a person: his soul. Marsellus Wallace had sold his soul to the devil, and was trying to buy it back. The three kids in the beginning of the movie were the devil's helpers. And remember that when the kid at the end came out of the bathroom with a "hand cannon," Jules and Vincent were not harmed by the bullets. "God came down and stopped the bullets" because they were saving a soul. It was divine intervention.

Some other parts in the movie that might support this story is :
The fact that Jules used the quote from the Bible just before he killed the guys with the briefcase, as he was blessing the bullets before he shot them.

Vincent witnessed what was in the case and was later killed in the movie, because he saw the image of God maybe?

Wallaces wife was also spared even though she had overdosed, because she was saved by Vincent, who again had witnessed what was in the case.

Wallace should have died after been totally ran down by a Honda Civic by the guy that wouldn't throw a boxing match, because he felt it wasn't right. A man without a soul coudn't die.

There are other points, but again the whole briefcase thing is still a mystery and urban legend.

As people say, it's most likely Marcellus's soul. It probably represents Redemption on the Samuel Jackson character, the Bruce Willis Character, and as well as the Uma Thurman character because we first see Marcellus as a person who is a mean spirited person but when he is saved, he gets a chance to regain himself and get the revenge he deserves.

One more theory in my opinion is that it might be a McGuffin. It might mean nothing really, but that maybe the films elements is more than about the Briefcase.

According to the way the story goes, it is Marcellus Wallaces' soul. Nobody ever says it, we never see it, but the magnitude of importance of the briefcase and the tell-tale bandaid on the back of Wallaces' neck after the boxing match, states to me that it was Marcellus' soul. At least that is what I think. Hope this helps. Take care! Later!

There's speculation all over the Internet about this, and I'm not sure Tarantino has actually said what it is.

My favorite story is that it's Marcellus Wallace's soul, and that it's being transported for sale to the devil....or something like that.

Great movie.

I think it was GOLD bars. or some top dolla funky, hairy, sticky BUUUUD. ever watch That 70's show? in one episode Hyde is given a movie container with bud from the stoner's cousin. And when he opened the container all you saw was a glow. that was to emphasize the potentcy and awesomeness of the weed lol. in pulp fictions case it could have been ne thing from weed, cocaine, gold.

This is what I think and it makes sense if you watch the movie and think about it. I believe that Marcellus Wallace's soul is in the brief case because he sold his sole to the devil. The combo on the suit case if you remember was 666 and he had a band aid on the back of his neck. The band aid spot is where his soul exited his body. Enjoy!

According to Tarantino, he intentionally didn't say what was in the briefcase so that the viewer could decide.

To quote Tarantino "It is what ever you want it to be." That is the beauty of films. Sometimes you have to think for your self and fill in the blanks. The shower scene in Physco is voted one of the most violent scene in American cinema but you never see the actual violence.
