I would suggest some Martin Lawrence movies. My husband always wants an action movie, and I always want a comedy. With Martin Lawrence, or say, Will Smith, you get the best of both worlds!

probably a will ferrel movie, mostly because most of them you dont need to know the plot to find parts funny, his movies are just a series of punchlines and not funny plots. maybe taladega nights or wedding crashers. but if you are looking for something with substance that everyone will actually watch the entire way through, rent the chumscrubber with jamie bell
