He couldn't come up with the money.

Progress
Donations go directly to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. You can read more about what they do here. The original plan to raise money to buy a Super Bowl ad faltered, and many folks criticized the selfish nature of that plan. I, too, felt the conflict there and made the decision to turn these funds over to Vanderbilt. You couldn’t ask for a worthier cause - they do both intensive care (for really sick kids) and research (to help kids from getting sick in the future).

As for the plan to get on the Super Bowl - I’m hoping to get picked up by a major advertiser (which you can read about on the story page). Obviously, the donations help with press and media (and the hospital), but if you’re looking to help make one of the SuperBowl ads this year a bit more entertaining and dramatic, please write about this site - tell your friends (particularly your friends who run Mastercard commercials or other Super Bowl advertisers)

Thanks to everyone who’s contributed and pledged donations. The thousands collected to date should make for an amazing contribution and a truly spectacular engagement gift, too.
