Reasons school uniforms are bad (assuming we are talking about the typical Catholic school uniforms that consist of pants for the boys and a skirt for the girls):

1. They promote sexism. It wouldn't be as bad if the girls could wear pants as part of their uniform. But it's not fair that the girls have to wear a skirt every day while the boys can wear pants. Women have fought for so long to have the same rights as men and to be treated as equals. Forcing women, and even little girls, to wear skirts to school every day goes completely against all this.

2. In the winter, girls are much colder in a skirt than they would be in pants.

3. Uniforms hinder kids’ development and expression of their own style and individuality.

4. Skirts are not as comfortable as pants. They make it more difficult to sit, move around, bend over, etc. It's fine if a girl CHOOSES to wear a skirt but it isn't practical to expect girls to wear skirts to school every day.

5. Uniforms are less comfortable for the boys as well as the girls. Even if you’re in pants, if you’re cold, you can’t wear an extra sweater or jacket or anything. Also the shoes they make the kids wear (both the boys and the girls) are much more uncomfortable for walking all around the school, switching classes, running back and forth to your locker, etc.

6. When everyone is wearing the exact same outfit, it makes it much easier to pick out and make fun of the kids with less-than-perfect bodies. When you choose you own outfit, it's much easier to find the style, fit, color, etc. that flatters your body type.

7. Kids go to school 5 days a week but most parents probably can’t afford, or just choose not to buy, 5 of the same uniform for each of their kids. This means that the kids have to wear the same dirty clothes a few days in a row before they are washed. In addition to the regular dirt and body odor (yuck!) that accumulates, what happens if you get a stain on your uniform? Let’s face it: kids tend to be messy, spill things a lot, and sit in the grass and dirt. This is all a normal part of childhood and kids shouldn’t have to be afraid of getting a stain on their uniform and then having nothing else clean to wear for the rest of the week!

8. If you’re one of those people who is in favor of school uniforms because you’re worried about all the inappropriate attire kids (especially teenagers) will wear if they are allowed to wear anything they want, there are very simple compromises that can be reached. A school can have rules governing the types of clothes its students are allowed to wear, without resorting to uniforms. The principal and the PTA could propose and vote on a dress code that could include things such as: No clothes with curse words on them, no micro-mini skirts, no tube tops, etc. This way students can still wear clothes they are comfortable in and that innocently express their personality, without wearing anything offensive or inappropriate.

Good:
1. Less time spent figuring out what to wear.
2. Less money spent because fewer outfits are necessary.
3. Less emphasis on designer wear.
4. Less distraction in class from inappropriate clothing styles.

Bad:
1. Can be expensive for poor families to outfit their children.
2. Teachers have to spend time monitoring proper uniform wear and reminding students -- tuck in your shirt, where are you socks, where is your tie, take your jacket off, put your jacket on ...
3. The difference between new uniforms and shabby uniforms still separates the haves from the have-nots.
4. No allowance for benign self-expression and individual style.
