so what you're saying is that the USA is eating itself from the inside out because the fundamentalists in power are just as intolerant as the powers that be outside the US, and refuse to respect any middle ground?

I actually do agree w/ that. The powers that be, and the 5% of America that thinks it speaks for the other 95% of us in the main refuse to see any other viewpoint that could be viable, or at least allow other nations the option to think for themselves. Also it does not help that Religion is part of the mix. Look at Palestine/Israel, and now Islam/Christianity. The so-called war we are in now is just this generations religious crusade, both sides saying I'm right and you're wrong etc... I however do not conclude that this is a US vs the world war, or that it will entail just the downfall of the US or western society. This is a war that will affect the whole world in a negative way. Albert Einstein was correct when he concluded "I do not know how WW III will be fought, but WW IV will be fought w/ sticks and stones". If things do not change it will escalate to more then a skirmish in the Middle East. No exit strategy even if exit started today will stop what has started.

And to think I do not consider myself a doom and gloom type person..

Wait a minute, what's this about Venezuela? First of all, Chavez is as far from a fundamentalist as they come. He doesn't hope for America's destruction -- he hopes that American foreign policy will stop being controlled by US corporations bent on continuing their economic domination of Latin America.

Chavez is demonized by the US media because he wants to do some good things for the people of his country -- keep gasoline prices down to 12 cents a gallon, improve health & education, etc., in short, to use his country's vast oil reserves for the benefit of the people, not for the oil corporations.

1. That message doesn't sell newspapers and get TV ads.
2. It's not just America - its western civilization that is the target (apparently the British people and I assume Europe are just as oblivious or Tony Blair would not have had to write his well-reasoned article in "Foreign Affairs").
3. The US political system rewards left-of-center centralists (both parties are socialist) - a Churchill would never get elected unless the country was in a real mess - something we have not seen since prior to the Civil War.
4. Americans traditionally do not realize who the enemy is or underestimate them until reality is crammed down our throats; 9/11 just didn't cut it as a throat-jammer.
