In my opinion it's because they are either insecure or they are doing something wrong and don't want you to have the same opportunity....

I think that some men see women as their property, which in their minds gives them the right to control every aspect of the womans life...Possibly the men are insecure and have to control what they can and in many cases this is the woman... Who really knows why some men do this, they should seek counseling, but most don't..

Because they are jerks.They think that controlling everything a woman does makes them a man.Also because they were not taught the correct way to treat/respect a lady.

Because they want to be in control and not let the wife breathe at all... Men should not treat any woman like this at all.

Because they are insecure. End of story. Any man like that isn't worth being around, you end up losing way too much of yourself. I don't care what your self esteem level is...if a man treats you like that, you deserve so much better. You in this case is the plural you...as in we all....as in you all...not necessarily you, the addresser of this question.
But yeah, guys who are like that typically are immature and never really learned to handle the autonomy of other human beings. They typically do anything to stay in control. Women can be like that too, and generally are, and it follows the same reasoning. The person is insecure that they may lose the person or they may be viewed as less than that person...or they just hate autonomy.

Not too long ago this was the way the social structure in the US worked. (it is still that way in many cultures)
I would suspect that the person in question comes from a family that still subscribes to this hierarchical model.
Although it is theoretically possible to change someones 'chauvinistic' compulsions your energy might be better applied to finding someone without the problem.
What ever you do don't get married to him, it will only get worse.

It has to do with the way they were raised for the most part. They grew up in a family where the man was dominating so they learned from that.
