If you REALLY don't want to dance with the person simply say "Thank you, but no."

You don't have to make up stories or excuses because that leaves it open for them coming back and asking you again which means you have to go through the embarrassment all over again.

As a side note - if you don't want to dance with that person because he/she is a beginner then you are being a dance snob. Suck it up and dance with them - you can even give them some (kind) pointers. How else are they going to improve.

I usually will just dance with the person. It's only a 3-4 minute song anyways so why hurt someone's feelings. I believe in karma and if I dis someone then someday when I want to dance (with a pro or someone better than myself) then I will get dissed.

But if you must decline please be kind. You don't want to hurt the person's feeling just decline the dance softly and nicely and let it go at that. A simple "no thank you" will do fine. Just please remember to be kind. Treat the person as if YOU were the one being let down. Would you rather hear a loud, mean "NOT WITH YOU!" or a kind, soft "no thank you".

Good luck. :)

A little white lie :D

"I'm sorry but I have a back/head ache"
"I just sat down, I'm out of breath"
"sorry but I have to use the restroom"
"Oh I really can't dance with this song"

this way no one is offended and everybody is happy. :)

you can always dodge the question by saying you have to get a drink or go to the bathroom. this can be tricky though if they see you a later and ask again.

"I'm sorry, but I am not of the droids that you are seeking."
"I'm sorry, but I think we should get more aqcuainted with eachother first."
"Hold your horses cowboy, I can't hold the ropes, here. Lets take it a little slower."
"Who are you?" (This one is intended to cause an embarrassing retreat, to which they'll respond to with a subtle "nevermind" or if they're either a dork or quite confident, a "(their name)"
