I have PCOS. I also presented a research paper to my college colloquium on the subject. Basically, the ovaries have encapsulated the eggs, causing ovulation not to occur. Instead, the ovaries produce too much testosterone, which is converted to insulin by the liver. As a result, the woman experiences less frequent or no periods. There are also a lot of side effects related to the high levels of testosterone and insulin, including but not limited to:

Type 2 diabetes
Excess hair growth (facial hair, chest hair, etc.)
More muscle mass
Acne
Dark patches of skin
Thinning hair
Obesity
Cardiovascular problems
High cholesterol

There is also a danger of endometriosis due to the lack of a regular period.

There is no cure for PCOS, but there are treatments available. Birth control pills can replace missing hormones to establish regular periods and reduce testosterone levels. Diabetes medications can help control the levels of insulin.

I have it and was diagnosed at 18. I had dark hair on my upper lip, acne, irregular periods, severe PMS, mood swings, and "passing out" spells which was the result of high insulin levels. I also gained 50 pounds in one year (from age 18-19). Basically, PCOS is a hormonal disorder which affects many different aspects of your health. You need to go see an Endocrinologist and they will do blood tests and an ultrasound to see if you have it.

I had both polycystic ovaries and endometriosis.....it causes pain when you are either about to have your period and sometimes for a little while afterwards. Mainly back pain and also lower stomach area pain, as well as made me nauseous, caused vomiting, heavy periods and longer periods. It can affect your hormone balance and cause other problems as well. You should deinately get checked out by a GYN doctor.
