An iguana is a horrible pet for a 6 year old! They are one of the highest maintenance and can be aggressive when they are young; if not handled properly then they will be even more aggressive when adult.
Reptiles in general are not the greatest pets for a young child. They can be quite expensive and fragile. I am assuming that you will be helping with it; if he is set on a lizard; then a leopard gecko is the best choice. They are very easy maitenence, they don't get very big (unlike your iguana which will get 6 feet or more!). And they are only about 20 bucks to buy. They do not require UVA and UVB lighting like an iguana and beardie; so they are cheaper to house as well. I would suggest putting the iguana up for adoption; and looking into leopard geckos. www.kingsnake.com or www.repticzone.com both have good care sheets on leopard geckos.
good luck!

Iguana's can be terrible pets especially for children. They are nasty and mean and whip there tails.. not all of them but just some.. I would'nt suggest a bearded dragon for a child so young though when they are baby's they are very fragile and require alot of maintenance and they have to be handled gently..For a child's first lizard I would suggest a leopard gecko they are very hardy friendly and easy to take care of and relatively cheap to own too. not like a bearded dragon or an iguana the leopard gecko stays small and will only require about a 20 gal terrarium and they mostly live on a diet of crickets I hope this helps..

Hi we have had a bearded dragon for 6 weeks he was 4 months old when we got him & hes fine with my 7 & 10 year old boys, he has never tried to bite anyone, they are really laid back, he is growing so fast as we have to feed him live food (crickets or locest) 2 times a day and then i give him vedg a few times a day too, he also has 2-3 poos per day but iv been told as he gets older he will only have 1-2 per week, i would say it would be a great pet to get your child if you are prepared to take the time and effot to look after him but if you have already got a iguana you should know the time you have to take to look after a reptile, a iguana is not a easy pet to keep as they are well known for biting and i wouldnt let my children have one, good luck anyway and let me know if you decide to get a beardie xxxxx.

I am 11 years old and i just recently got a bearded dragon for Christmas . I don't reccomend a bearded dragon for a child under the age of 7 because it is hard to care for you must feed it every morning and play with it frequently . if your child is older than yes it is a good pet .Bearded dragons are very calm and playful, they cant bite because they have no teeth and they wont run away. I hope this helps you in some way

A cat or a goldfish is a good pet for a kid. Reptiles are to difficult for most adults to care for properly let along a kid. Please find a good home for your Iguana and wait until your kid is 15 or so. And do alot of research iguanas need basking temps of 95-100 and normal temps about 75-85. They can not eat meat or bugs, they are strictly herbivores even though they will eat it they can not process animal protien. They need clean water in their cage and should take warm baths every other day or so. And they get about 7ft long and will need a huge cage like 7' tall, 6' depth and 7' wide. Get a hamster or something.

Why not something safer like a leopard gecko. Rarely do they bite, easy to keep in doors and they eat any kind of bugs. No special cage requirements and no sticky feet to escape the cage. But a 6 year old is in my opinion too young for a pet reptile. Sanitation is not in the forethought on most 6 year olds. How about a nice Guinea pig?

if your child is young and very hands on a bearded dragon wouldnt be the best choice, but if he just wants a pet to look at and maybe hold then bearded dragons are rather tame

If he lives to touch everything in sight then I suggest not. My mom got me a bearded dragon when I was 9 and i ended up having to go to the hospital from bites. Try a cat or small dog. If he just loves to look then it would be an good pet.
good luck!

An iguana is too aggressive and a beardie is too placid, unless you buy him a beardie that is at least 4 - 5 months old, as small children tend to squeeze the little beardies tooooooo hard

Of all the reptiles I always push Beardie ;Uros; and Blue tounge Skinks as pets for children and first time adults. Remeber that after each hadeling to wash or sanitize your hands. Iggys are the worst pets for about anyone who cant commit to constant hands on. Good luck
Oh geckos are cool, but are super fast and quick constant jumpers so for kids who want to touch I say no
