Unlike today's pols, Franklin put his life on the line.
When he signed the Dec of Ind he announced he was a traitor to his legal govt. If the war didn't go his way, the brits could have hung him for treason.
Imagine someone doing that today.

The problem is with our modern educational system where very few of us learn any civics lessons at all. Even fewer have studied history and fewer have read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Unfortunately, we have too many cowards who have been awarded the ability to vote, and they are willing to give up a most of their liberty, to take the easy way toward security. They are in for a rude shock. The terrorists, just like modern criminals, are always one step ahead of law enforcement who are only able to react to what has happened, not what might happen.

I doubt that when Ben Franklin was alive he could have forseen that far into the future, while he was smart it was a totally different world just keep in mind it took almost 3 weeks for the british forces to get across the atlantic to just start preperations to attack us. But again its a totally different world than what he lived in.

Franklin was an idealist. We (as a country, I wasn't around then) temporarily gave up freedom during the Civil War, WW I & WW II. We have survived with our freedoms intact.
The only freedoms we have been asked to relinquish now are the freedom to talk to foreign terrorists without someone hearing us & the freedom to launder money for terrorists.
I'm fine with thet. Maybe that's just me.

I like Ben Franklin
and i agree with him on that quote....mostly
i disagree with many patriot act things, but at the same time i agree with some of it
but is some freedom worth giving up for security? Or is it only absolutes? I think some is worth it, just depends what freedoms and how much, and for what security

No our politicians are not smarter than Franklin. Franklin supported our bill of rights and the quote you gave applies equally to our right to keep and bare arms, doesn't it?

I doubt he saw planes flying into buildings. I'll get back to you after I ask him. You are dismissed.
