In physics, a conservation law states that a particular measurable property of an isolated physical system does not change as the system evolves:. There are three mayor conservation laws on classics mechanics:
Conservation of energy
Conservation of linear momentum
Conservation of angular momentum

The law of conservation of energy/matter states that energy/matter is neither destroyed nor created in a chemical / physical / nuclear reaction.

Stated another way - energy and matter are simply two different forms of the same thing, and you can convert from one to the other, but the net result is the same amount of it all existing after the change as it did before the change.

Illustration:
Imagine one of those old-fashioned balance scales sitting on a regular modern one. One side of the balance represents matter, and the other side represents energy. The whole thing weighs something on the modern scale, say 50 pounds. If you move weights from one side of the balance to the other, it will change the side it tips towards, but the other scale will always show 50 pounds. That is how conservation works.

It is conserving things, usually natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, but it can also refer to an individual, for instance someone may rest for a while to conserve energy. But, usually refers to natural resources.
